🌍 Celebrating Disability History Month 2024: Amplifying Leadership and Breaking Down Barriers 🌍

Nneka Uchea Smith

This December, the theme is "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future".

This is a powerful one and a perfect reminder that disability isn’t something to just recognise once a year. It is a part of our everyday reality.

The theme also allows us to celebrate those people whose leadership, contributions, and perspectives often get sidelined or overlooked. These are the people doing the work, challenging the status quo, and pushing for change, often without recognition.

Disability History Month reminds us of the importance of recognising and addressing the diverse experiences of individuals:

✅ Born with a disability

✅ Acquired disabilities

✅ Disabilities resulting from chronic conditions

✅ Hidden or less recognised disabilities

So this month, let's think about how we can amplify the voices of people with disabilities, celebrate their leadership, and continue breaking down the barriers that hold us back.

As I reflect (something I need to do more of) on the last 12 months, I can’t help but marvel at how much has happened...

🏆 January, I was humbled to be nominated 23rd in Sanius Health's Top 80 Most Influential People in Sickle Cell Disease 2023. A truly unforgettable moment!

📒 February, I started leading an additional team, which added new challenges but also incredible growth.

📝 March saw the publication of Living with Sickle Cell: An Information Guide, a labour of love by all involved: https://lnkd.in/ecbj3nKm

🩸 June was World Sickle Cell Day

🥇 August we saw the inspiring achievements of Dame Sarah Storey at Paris 2024 Paralympics

Presenting at the SoR LMS celebration event

💬 October I was the keynote speaker for AHP Day, I focused on authentic self, inclusivity, and intersectionality.

🏆 November, I completed the Society of Radiographers’ Leadership Mentoring Scheme and became the Co-chair of the Disability and Wellness Network at work

📝 December, I’m halfway through my Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Healthcare Leadership MSc

I’m proud to be a part of the DAWN staff network it isn't another “check the box” activity any more. DAWN is about facilitating real action: it’s about advocating for inclusivity, offering support, and building sustainable processes that improve accessibility in both our work and the wider community.

Let’s keep pushing for a more inclusive world where everyone can thrive, and let's find our allies, support and love when life gives us the unexpected challenges!
