Reflecting on 12 Months in the Society of Radiographers’ Leadership Mentoring Scheme

For the past year, I’ve had the privilege, of being part of the Society of Radiographers' Leadership Mentoring Scheme. Designed to support those aiming for senior leadership roles, the scheme pairs mentees with experienced radiography leaders from across the country, and I was fortunate enough to be one of the 10 selected.
Having a mentor who truly understood me – how I work, why I prefer to be backstage rather than in the spotlight – was a game-changer.
My mentor just got me, which made the experience invaluable. I’ve always found it difficult to recognise and talk about my own achievements. Being in change management, there’s always something more to be done, another goal to achieve, which can make talking about successes feel like an unfinished story.
But this scheme has taught me that part of leadership is about showcasing your work and, in turn, your professional brand. For me, that’s clinical education. If people don’t know what you do, why you do it, or see the passion behind it, how can they buy into it?
It’s been an eye-opening journey, and I’ve gained not only leadership and management skills, but also a new level of professional confidence – something I didn’t realise I needed as much as I did.
I’m truly grateful for this experience and for my mentor’s guidance throughout the year.
